Jim Benson awarded honorary degree at Greenville Technical College commencement exercises

Jim Benson of Greer received an honorary degree from Dr. Keith Miller, president of Greenville Technical College, during commencement exercises last week.
 

Jim Benson was awarded an honorary degree at the Greenville Technical College commencement exercises last week.

Benson established a business in Greer at the age of 17, hauling used cars from Pennsylvania back to Greer to be sold. With the money he earned, he established a used car lot, and before he was 21, established a Chrysler franchise. Today, that one dealership has turned into seven, an amazing success story that began in Greer.

Greer High School Athletic Hall of Fame nominations now being accepted

The Greer High School Booster Club is accepting nominations for induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

Nominees must have graduated from Greer High School a minimum of five years before becoming eligible. Criteria are based on athletic accomplishments as a high school student.

In the 1970's McGee (he was always known only as McGee back then) was inseparable from his constant companion DC Townsend. They probably spent more time at Greer High School than I did and McGee was and still is a sports team’s (any sports team) biggest fan.

McGee has an uncanny ability to show up anytime and almost every time that something is going on. He has attended more grand openings and ribbon cuttings than anyone that I know.

Greer completes perfect regular season defeating rival Blue Ridge

Greer stepped onto the football field at rival Blue Ridge Friday night with its unbeaten record on the line and left with a 32-7 victory over the Tigers and another slice of history for itself.

The Yellow Jackets, ranked No. 3 in the state in Class 3A, recorded back-to-back undefeated seasons for the first time in the nearly 100-year history of Greer football and will carry a 10-0 mark into the Class 3A playoffs for the second straight year.

“It's absolutely amazing to go undefeated two times in a row with your brothers is just amazing,” Greer linebacker Brodie Wright said.

Williams brings images to life at home and from far away

DC and McGee, boyhood friends, were photographed by Perry Williams more than 40 years ago under the crabapple tree at the old Greer High School.
 

Perry Williams has been taking photographs since he attended Greer High School. A camera, sometimes three or four, are nearby at all times.

Williams, a commissioner on the Greer Commission of Public Works, entrepreneur and professor at Clemson University, all but swept the Greer Juried Arts photography contest judged last month. He finished 1-2-3 in “Greer Goes Global” and 1-2 in “Greer – An Upstate Destination”.

NGU's Farrington is NCCAA Coach of the Year

Jeff Farrington coached North Greenville University to a 7-5 record and a win in the Victory Bowl Championship.
 
 

Jeff Farringon, head coach at North Greenville University, has been named the National Christian College Athletic Association football coach of the Year, it was reported on the school's Facebook page.

Farrington coached the NGU Crusaders to a 7-5 record and the NCCAA Victory Bowl Championship. The Crusaders beat Shorter College, 42-16, last month in Rome, Ga.

The Yellow Jackets Sports Network, for the past 25 years, has committed its Friday nights to bringing the sounds of Greer High School football to its followers one play at a time.

Robbie Gravley, Chad Lister, and Van Brannon, in 1990, went live on the radio and a new tradition in Greer was born. They have added more local talent along the way picking up Steven "Worm" Gay, Bryan "Red" Watson, and David Holtzclaw but continued with the traditional play-by-play calls, coaches and players interviews and halftime reports.

Bensons donate $3 million to Greenville Tech, Greer campus renamed

The Greer Campus of Greenville Technical College today became the Benson Campus honoring Jim Benson and his $3 million gift to the college.

Benson’s $2 million cash gift is the largest ever received by the Greenville Tech Foundation. In addition, he also pledged an additional $1 million to be paid over five years. In recognition of both gifts, the campus has been renamed and Building 302 will bear the names of Evelyn and Jim Benson.

Greer alumni reflect Jim Benson's Old Car Museum

The collection of classic automobiles took many of the former Greer High classmates back to the day where they gathered at the lunch counter.
 
 

Jim Benson shared the 50th celebration of his automobile business by opening his Old Car Museum Saturday to Greer High School graduates and acquaintances Saturday.

The antique and classic cars were starting points for the classmates reminicing about their growing up and attending high school in Greer.

Gambrells end family's way of life as volunteer firemen

Forty years ago Danny Gambrell rushed into burning buildings with a wet cloth covering his nose and mouth, while he listened for sounds of life. His eyes burned from the fire's smoke.

It was how his father, Ralph, and uncle, Jack, taught him. It was a way of life for the Gambrell men as volunteer firemen with the Greer Fire Department for an aggregate of 176 years. "You follow by example what you wanted to do," Danny said. "Your pay was people telling you 'thank you.'"

Grateful for family and good health

Isn't good health something we all as mothers and fathers want to share with our children . . . for our children?
 

It’s easy to be grateful for the big moments in your life, but in the day-to-day craziness, sometimes we forget to be grateful for all of the people and the little things in life that make us happy. 

Besides being grateful for my family . . . especially my late mother, Bobbie Wood Hawkins,  I am grateful for good health.

Four man teams are $300 and include green fees, cart, range balls and lunch.
